ENVIRONMENTAL Justice

Promoting environmental justice in the 3rd Ward: a climate action focus

In my role as the Director of Engagement at the West Michigan Environmental Action Council, my primary focus is on advocating for environmental justice. This means that I am dedicated to ensuring that all communities, especially those that have been historically marginalized, have a fair and equal say in environmental decision-making processes. I firmly believe in the importance of amplifying the voices of these communities, as they often bear the brunt of environmental issues but are not always given the platform to express their concerns.

To achieve environmental justice, I am fully committed to supporting the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. This plan is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and ensuring that our communities are prepared to adapt to its impacts. However, my approach goes beyond just supporting the plan itself. I am determined to prioritize marginalized communities within this plan, ensuring that they have fair access to the necessary resources and opportunities to actively participate in its implementation.

Ensuring equitable policy implementation for all communities

Additionally, I am passionate about rectifying the disparities that exist in policy implementation. It is not enough to have well-intentioned policies; they must also be effectively implemented to bring about meaningful change. I will work tirelessly to address any gaps or inconsistencies in policy implementation, ensuring that all communities, regardless of their socio-economic status or background, can benefit equally from environmental initiatives.

Alongside my commitment to environmental justice, I am also dedicated to achieving our ambitious tree canopy goal. Trees play a vital role in mitigating the impacts of climate change, improving air quality, and enhancing the overall well-being of our communities. Therefore, I will actively support efforts to increase our tree canopy, ensuring that our city becomes greener and more sustainable.

Championing community solar for accessible renewable energy

Furthermore, I strongly advocate for the implementation of community solar projects. Community solar allows residents and businesses to access clean and renewable energy sources, even if they are unable to install solar panels on their own properties. By advocating for community solar, I aim to make renewable energy more accessible and affordable for all members of our community, regardless of their income level or housing situation.

Addressing investment inequality in the 3rd Ward

Residents in the 3rd Ward have raised concerns about the unequal distribution of public and private investment, particularly in the last decade or so. Specifically, between 2012 and 2017, the region south of Wealthy Street and east of Jefferson and Eastern avenues received only about 1.5 percent of the $1.29 billion of private investment that was facilitated through public tax incentives. While there have been some significant investments through regionally-tailored plans such as the Southtown Plan and South Division Plan, there is still a need to address the historical lack of investment that the area has experienced for many years. To rectify this, it is crucial to make the 3rd Ward even more attractive and welcoming for potential investors.

Enhancing 3rd Ward's appeal for businesses through community and infrastructure improvements

During recent master plan meetings, community members have emphasized the importance of beautification and safety measures to address this concern. As the Chair of the Vital Streets Oversight Commission, I have worked hard to deliver significant investments in the 3rd Ward to address its previous neglect. Through our Vital Streets plan, we have focused on repairing miles of sidewalks in the 3rd Ward, which will undoubtedly enhance its appeal to potential investors (with an added benefit of making our communities easier to navigate). Additionally, we have the opportunity to collaborate with local businesses in the 3rd Ward, thereby showcasing the incredible talent and potential that exists within the community. By doing so, we can demonstrate that the 3rd Ward is not only a great place to live but also a thriving hub for business.

Legacy and vision: economic empowerment in the 3rd Ward

My great-grandfather, Governor Lee, owned Lee’s Shoe Repair on Eastern Avenue in the 3rd Ward. Through his small business, he was able to support his wife and ten children, highlighting the economic prosperity that was once able to be achieved within our community. As the 3rd Ward’s next City Commissoner, my goal is to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to experience such prosperity. Therefore, I am committed to supporting initiatives that will bring good-paying jobs to the 3rd Ward and uplift entrepreneurs and small businesses, as they play a crucial role in driving our local economy forward.

EQUITABLE HOUSING

Addressing gentrification and housing challenges in the 3rd Ward

As a fourth- generation Grand Rapidian, I have seen the often important and necessary changes to the 3rd Ward. I also deeply understand the concerns many have about the state of housing in our city. The issue of gentrification is a concern for numerous community members, as it often leads to the displacement of low-income individuals and the transformation of neighborhoods into more affluent areas. This problem is not limited to our city but is also observed in different parts of the globe, raising concerns about its potential effects on cultural diversity, community cohesion, and the accessibility of affordable housing. To combat the negative effects of gentrification, it is crucial to implement regulations for affordable housing. This can be achieved through various means, such as inclusionary zoning policies, which require developers to include a certain percentage of affordable housing units in their projects. By mandating the provision of affordable housing, cities can ensure that low-income residents have access to housing options within their communities, even as the neighborhood undergoes redevelopment.

Promoting sustainable housing through community land trusts in the 3rd Ward

Additionally, establishing community land trusts can play a vital role in securing housing options for low-income residents and maintaining affordability. Community land trusts are nonprofit organizations that acquire and hold land for the benefit of the community. By acquiring land and leasing it to residents or housing cooperatives, community land trusts can eyznsure that housing remains affordable in perpetuity. This model allows residents to have a stake in the community and protects them from being priced out due to rising property values. In the process of urban development, it is essential to prioritize the needs of the existing community. This can be achieved by involving community members in decision-making processes and ensuring that their voices are heard. Development approvals should consider the impact on the existing community, including the potential for displacement and the preservation of affordable housing. By prioritizing the needs of our existing 3rd Ward community, we can ensure sustainable growth that benefits all residents and promotes inclusivity.

In my role as a program manager for the homeless population, I have witnessed the urgent need to assist those experiencing homelessness. I have collaborated with individuals facing chronic conditions like COPD, heart failure, and diabetes to ensure they have access to stable housing options. It is crucial to advocate for housing-first strategies and implement a comprehensive, community-based approach to provide services, housing, and local initiatives for the homeless community.
